CAST AND CREW

BALTASAR KORMAKUR (Director/Producer) is an actor and filmmaker whose work spans theater, movies and television. Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, he graduated as an actor from the Iceland Academy of Arts in 1990. He was immediately signed on by the National Theatre of Iceland, where he worked as one of its leading young performing artists until 1997. During the last two years of his assignment, he also directed several ambitious works, after producing and directing highly popular independent stage productions, alongside his projects with the National Theatre.

In 2000, he wrote, directed, acted in and produced the feature film "101 Reykjavik," which became an international hit and earned the Discovery Award at the Toronto International Film Festival. Variety selected him as one of the 10 Directors to Watch, along with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Christopher Nolan and other newcomers at the time. Soon after, Kormakur started Blueeyes Productions, subsequently renamed RVK Studios, and since then has maintained his focus on writing, producing and directing films. His films "The Sea," "A Little Trip to Heaven," "Jar City" and "White Night Wedding" were all successful in Iceland and won numerous international awards. Kormakur's "The Deep," which eerily captures the tragic reallife story of the lone survivor of a capsized fishing boat off the frigid Icelandic coast, premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival and was shortlisted for the foreign language Academy Award.

Since 2008, Kormakur has directed and produced several non-Icelandic features. His most recent was the epic adventure "Everest," which starred Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson, Keira Knightly, Robin Wright and Jake Gyllenhaal. Released by Universal Pictures, the film has grossed over $203 million worldwide. His first U.S. project was "Inhale," an independent film produced by the L.A.-based 26 Films, which starred Dermot Mulroney, Diane Kruger and Sam Shepard, released in October 2010. He followed it with "Contraband," starring Mark Wahlberg, Ben Foster and Kate Beckinsale, which took first place at the U.S. box office during its opening weekend in early January 2012. "Contraband," produced by Working Title Films and Universal, is the English language remake of the Icelandic film "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," which Kormakur starred in and produced with Agnes Johansen through his Blueeyes Productions. His next American film, the action-comedy "2 Guns," which starred Denzel Washington and Wahlberg, along with Paula Patton, Bill Paxton and Edward James Olmos, was also No. 1 at the box office its opening weekend and has grossed over $131 million worldwide.

Kormakur directed, co-wrote and starred in his most recent Icelandic movie, "The Oath," his first time in front of the camera in eight years. Also starring Hera Hilmar, "The Oath" won six Edda Awards and seven Edda Award nominations. He also produced the Icelandic comedic drama "Virgin Mountain," which acclaimed Icelandic filmmaker Dagur Kari directed. Additionally, he produced the upcoming Icelandic thrillers "Vultures" and "Mules."

Kormakur and his RVK Studios also ventured into television with the critically-hailed serialized crime drama "Trapped," which earned record ratings and led to the second season, "Trapped 2." All of Kormakur's films have been made through his RVK Studios, which also includes a VFX production entity, RVX, headed by Dadi Einarsson. Kormakur is currently expanding RVK Studios, which will serve not just as his own production hub, but as a "creative village" devoted to film, television and production and the artists who conceive of and generate these projects.
