Bot-kickin' mayhem

There is so much action packed into every second of Transformers that by the time it's over, you may be tempted to go outside and give the box office another 10 bucks.

Transformers has some of the best action sequences you'll see all summer.

"Transformers" uncovers man's greatest love -- for machines that whir, click, rev or destroy... Director Michael Bay -- of "Armageddon" and "Pearl Harbor" -- has superbly universalized the Transformers franchise, a behemoth of a subculture that includes a 1980s animated television series, comic books, the Hasbro line of toys, a 1986 movie and Japanese TV spinoffs with titles such as "Transformers: Super-God Masterforce."

Transformers (* * * out of four) will appeal to the kid in all of us.

In Bay's world, which is more about metal than people, every action sequence must be edited like a cinematic seizure and every extreme-telephoto image must be jammed headlong into the next... There you have it: From "Armageddon" to "Pearl Harbor" to "Transformers," no one went to a Michael Bay film for sensitivity training.
