When DJ (Columbus Short), a troubled youth from Los Angeles, moves to Atlanta to attend Truth University, he discovers "stepping," the age-old style of dance traditionally done in African-American Fraternities, where teams demonstrate complex moves and create rhythmic sounds by using their bodies. DJ's raw talent and hip-hop inspired moves quickly place him at the center of a fierce rivalry between two fraternities, the winner of which will be determined in front of a sold-out arena at the annual stepping championships. But before he can help his teammates, he must battle his own demons and learn the true meaning of brotherhood.
A compelling drama about the quest for individuality and the power of fraternity, "Stomp the Yard" features some of the most original and exhilarating dance performances ever filmed.— More here |

Film moves in positive direction,
step by step
STEVE PERSALL
St. Petersburg Times
Stomp the Yard opens a window on another facet of African-American
culture. Stomp the Yard begins where too many hip-hop movies languish,
among inner city gangbangers for whom pride is a reason to kill
and thug life is cool... Routine dance melodrama enlivened by a strong performance from
Columbus Short
Kirk Honeycutt
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
Unfortunately, this will not be a widely seen performance.
The Screen Gems production is aimed narrowly at those within
the black community with an affinity for a particular kind
of dancing. The film could do $20 million-range business but
should fade after a couple of weeks, then perhaps win a larger
audience in video...
Dave
Scott's choreography is often dynamic and imaginative
Ed Gonzalez
SLANT MAGAZINE
The film is best when it's gaga for the extreme poses the human
body can strike to the rhythm of a phat beat but stumbles whenever
it fraudulently gives daily life at Truth University the sound
and sheen of a Coldplay music video...
2 1/2 Stars
Michael Phillips
Chicago Tribune
In the dance scenes director Sylvain White keeps cutting everybody
off at the waist, and editor David Checel is so into speed and
dazzle the sequences keep getting cut into tiny little bits. Yet
the visual noise is offset by the people on screen. Short and Good
are long on charm, and DJ's uncle and aunt are played by Harry
J. Lennix (always a pleasure) and Valarie Pettiford (a Fosse dance
veteran herself)...
