Plot Summary: When up-and-coming sports writer Erik Kernan saves a homeless man from a scrape with a group of rowdy college kids, he unwittingly finds himself face to face with no ordinary bum, but Champ, the one-time boxing great Bob Satterfield. What begins as a story resurrecting a once-great man turns into an incredible journey, and an opportunity for Erik to reexamine his own life, his relationship with his young son and his recently separated wife. Grade D+
Lisa Schwarzbaum
Entertainment Weekly

Speechy monologues on the responsibilities of journalism, the particular evil of infotainment, and the gooey sanctity of the bond between fathers and sons all but nullify Jackson's zesty performance.

2½ stars (out of four)
Michael Phillips
Chicago Tribune

The film is easy to take, though it must be said: It's almost 100 percent blather. A lot of movies are. You just notice the blather in director Rod Lurie's film because "Resurrecting the Champ" relays a story about learning to separate the blather from the truth.

One-sided plot brings down 'Champ'
Wesley Morris
Boston Globe

Resurrecting the Champ is one-sided Hollywood claptrap about honesty and valor, about how the truth, sigh, can set us free -- well, some of us.

A thoughtful human drama and, without getting all mushy about it, deeply felt.
Bob Strauss
Los Angeles Daily News

This film is less about what happens than what it means, and that alone is a refreshing use of the medium these days.
