In an incredible twist of fate, a Scottish doctor (James McAvoy) on a Ugandan medical mission becomes irreversibly entangled with one of the world's most barbaric figures: Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). Impressed by Dr. Garrigan's brazen attitude in a moment of crisis, the newly self-appointed Ugandan President Amin hand picks him as his personal physician and closest confidante. Though Garrigan is at first flattered and fascinated by his new position, he soon awakens to Amin's savagery - and his own complicity in it. Horror and betrayal ensue as Garrigan tries to right his wrongs and escape Uganda alive. — More here |

Whitaker
powerful in portrayal of brutal Amin in 'Last King'
Bill Zwecker
Chicago Sun-Times
This is director Kevin MacDonald's first feature film, yet along with cinematographer
Anthony Dod Mantle, he has produced a motion picture that will become an instant
political classic.
Evenly
paced Last King plays it smart
Chris Vognar
Dallas Morning News
And come awards season, it will be the movie that makes Forest Whitaker a solid
bet to take home his first Oscar.
Whitaker
is on fire, and as long as he's onscreen, King keeps you
riveted.
Peter Travers
Rolling Stone
Powerful. Thundering. Colossal -- puny words to describe Forest Whitaker's
king-size, Oscar-ready performance as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. There is pow
to spare in this first feature -- and a lively one -- from documentarian Kevin
Macdonald (Touching the Void).
Absolute
Power: A chameleonic Forest Whitaker dominates an awkward
Idi Amin biopic
Ella Taylor
Village Voice
Whitaker humanizes Amin without in any way excusing his manipulative seductions
or his appalling brutality, and he emerges as a tragic template for the whole
raft of African tin-pot dictators who have followed him, their promise misshapen
by a long history of poverty and colonialism, and by the premature acquisition
of unchecked power.
