"Freedom Writers" is inspired by a true story and the diaries of real Long Beach teenagers after the LA riots, during the worst outbreak of interracial gang warfare. Two-time Academy AwardŽ winner Hilary Swank stars as Erin Gruwell, whose passion to become a teacher is soon challenged by a group of Black, Latino, and Asian gangbangers who hate her even more than each other. When Erin begins to listen to them in a way no adult has ever done, she begins to understand that for these kids, getting through the day alive is enough -- they are not delinquents but teenagers fighting "a war of the streets" that began long before they were born. Erin gives them something they never had from a teacher before -- respect. For the first time, these teens experience a hope that maybe, they might show the world that their lives matter and they have something to say. — More here |

Humanity over
its presumed nobility
John Anderson
Variety
Another movie about a well-meaning, white-bread teacher thrust among
the savages? No, not by a long shot. Although "Freedom Writers" is
the latest in a long line of saint-saves-students stories, it takes
the bold approach of being earnest, honest and unafraid to be called
naive. As a result, it's extremely affecting. Presided over by a
sensitive, open performance by Hilary Swank and blessed by a gifted
group of young actors, the drama could win hearts and dollars, especially
if Paramount pushes pic's humanity over its presumed nobility.
High
marks -- for effort and for merit
Teresa Budasi
Chicago Sun-Times
"Freedom Writers," which has a lot to say about education
and the flaws in the American public-school system, gets high marks
-- for effort and for merit. So much could have gone wrong here.
It's as formulaic as any of its predecessors -- "Stand and Deliver," "Lean
on Me," "Dangerous Minds" and the granddaddy of them
all, 1967's "To Sir, With Love" -- where a teacher placed
in a classroom of "unteachables" must use unorthodox methods
to get them in line and make them want to learn. But where a couple
of those stories went astray, the highly inspiring "Freedom
Writers" manages to maintain the integrity of its message.

Ms. With Love: A Teacher’s Heart Fords a Social Divide

Funny how point of view works. If so many films about so-called
troubled teenagers come off as little more than exploitation, it’s
often because the filmmakers are not really interested in them,
just their dysfunction. “Freedom Writers,” by contrast,
isn’t only about an amazingly dedicated young teacher who
took on two extra jobs to buy supplies for her students (to supplement,
as Mr. LaGravenese carefully points out, a $27,000 salary); it’s
also, emphatically, about some extraordinary young people.

LaGravenese keeps the action moving and his shots are clear, unvarnished
and unsentimental. He earns top marks during the pivotal scene
where the wide-eyed “Miss G” finally cracks, and what
follows is an intense debate on race with the students she struggles
to understand. Instead of embellishing, LaGravenese lets the kids
tell the story for him, and his camera simply follows the action.
The thing about Freedom Writers is that it will follow you too,
right out of the movie theatre and into your own head and heart.
