Step Brothers, Out of Step

I did not like the film. It made my smile a few times, but no laughter. The audience I was with did not seem to be any more thrilled about the film either. All the actors were top flight and delivered good work, but it was the script that made this film as sad as it was.

The potential was good. So many come from blended families. But, that potential was lost. Too bad!

Mamma Mia - I Was the Only Guy There!

I went to go see Mamma Mia, and I think I was the only male in the theater. I liked the movie; even if the audience surrounding me was all female and generally over 30 years old (probably more like 40). But then, I like the music of ABBA. I have always wondered why their songs made such an impact, what makes it so special. Whatever the reason, it will be a part of our culture for at least as long as my existence here on earth.

Most reviews gave this film a so-so rating, and almost without except praised the music. Well, I enjoyed both, as did the audiences I was with. They even stayed through the closing credit. It must be that most negative and so-so reviews came from male reviewers, and they simply did not connect with what they perceived as a “chic flick.”

I recommend the film. It was a great way to spend an afternoon.

Step Brother Stomps X-Files

A few weeks ago it seemed like a no brainer. “The X-Files: I Want to Believe” would beat out “Step Brothers”. Roger Ebert even gave The X-Files a 4 ½ out of 5 approval score. He had nothing really good to say about Step Brothers, focusing on the over-the-top language. On opening weekend I noticed that “The X-Files” pulled a mere $10 million and Step Brothers brought in a substantial $30M. I was blown away.

I really liked the title “The X-Files: I Want to Believe.” I though, here is a film that would connect with a lot of people, because so many struggle with their faith. Remembering Will Farrell’s unfunny comedy Semi-Pro opening weekend –a $15M flop– earlier this year, I was not looking forward to Step Brothers.

So, I admit that I do not get it. The only saving grace this past weekend was “The Dark Knight” which held the #1 position with an amazing $75M! Did anyone else find the low box-office for the once popular X-Files perplexing?
